Not Every Brand Needs Another Campaign. Some Need a Better Way to Be Seen.
Updated: Aug 3
Why memorable brand experiences are becoming the real competitive advantage and what brands can learn from IKEA's mobile activation across Jakarta and Bandung.
For decades, marketers have been taught that building awareness is a numbers game. Reach more people, buy more media, increase impressions, generate more clicks. Yet despite marketing becoming more measurable than ever, one challenge remains stubbornly difficult to solve: Being seen doesn't necessarily mean being remembered.
Today's consumers are exposed to thousands of marketing messages every day. They scroll past sponsored content, skip video ads, ignore banners, and filter out anything that feels irrelevant. According to Kantar's Media Reactions study, consumers consistently perceive real brand experiences as more enjoyable and trustworthy than many traditional advertising formats, highlighting a growing preference for interactions that feel authentic rather than interruptive.
This shift is forcing marketers to rethink one important question. It's no longer enough to ask: "How can we reach more people?" The better question is: "How can we create experiences that people genuinely want to engage with?" That is where brand activation becomes far more than an event. It becomes a business strategy.
Brand Activation Isn't One Thing. It's a Way of Thinking.
One of the biggest misconceptions about brand activation is that it's often associated with a single format.
A roadshow.
A booth.
A product sampling event.
A mall activation.
While all of these are valid activation formats, they represent only a small fraction of what's possible. Great brand activation is not defined by where it happens. It is defined by what it achieves.
Its purpose is to bridge the gap between communication and experience—transforming audiences from passive viewers into active participants. Sometimes that happens inside a shopping mall, sometimes through experiential exhibitions, sometimes through community engagement, sometimes through digital and social interactions and sometimes the city itself becomes the campaign.
“The most effective activations don't ask consumers to come closer to the brand. They bring the brand closer to consumers.”
Why Physical Experiences Matter More in a Digital-First World
Digital marketing has fundamentally changed how brands reach audiences. Discovery often begins on social media. Research happens through search engines. Recommendations come from creators, reviews, and increasingly, AI-powered platforms. Yet despite this shift, physical experiences continue to play a critical role in shaping consumer perception.
Research from Edelman's Trust Barometer consistently shows that trust is built through authentic interactions and lived experiences—not merely through advertising exposure. Meanwhile, renowned marketing scientist Byron Sharp, in How Brands Grow, argues that brands grow by increasing both mental availability (being easy to remember) and physical availability (being easy to encounter).
This principle has become increasingly relevant. Because attention today isn't won by shouting louder. It's earned by showing up in the right place, at the right moment, with an experience worth remembering.
From Awareness to Memory: The Missing Link in Many Marketing Campaigns
Many campaigns stop after generating awareness. But awareness alone rarely creates loyalty. Consumers might recognize your campaign today. Forget it tomorrow and choose a competitor next week. What creates lasting impact is not exposure, it's memory.
Behavioral science has repeatedly demonstrated that people are more likely to remember experiences that involve emotion, participation, novelty, and social interaction than messages they simply observe.
In other words: People rarely remember advertisements, they remember moments. The excitement of discovering something unexpected, the fun of participating in an activity, the story they later tell friends, the Instagram Story they voluntarily post, the smile attached to the interaction. Those are the moments that transform awareness into emotional connection.
When Movement Becomes Media: Rethinking Mobile Brand Activation
Most outdoor advertising relies on one assumption: People will pass by the message, mobile activation reverses that logic. The message moves through people's everyday lives.
Instead of waiting for consumers to visit a store or event venue, the brand enters spaces where communities naturally gather.
Busy city streets.
Car Free Day.
Public parks.
Community destinations.
This approach doesn't simply increase visibility, it increases relevance. Rather than interrupting people's routines, it becomes part of them and that changes how the brand is experienced.
IKEA: Bringing the Brand Experience Beyond the Store
This philosophy came to life through Interface's collaboration with IKEA Indonesia in a month-long mobile brand activation campaign across Jakarta and Bandung. Rather than relying solely on retail traffic, IKEA expanded its presence beyond store walls.
For two weeks, a fully branded activation truck travelled across Jakarta. The journey then continued across Bandung for another two weeks. The objective was straightforward but strategically important: Bring IKEA's products and more importantly, its brand experience—closer to everyday communities.
The activation wasn't designed merely to increase visibility. It was designed to create interaction.

Every Stop Was an Invitation to Participate
Throughout the campaign, the truck stopped at several high-footfall destinations, including:
Car Free Day Jakarta
Car Free Day Bekasi
Car Free Day Saparua, Bandung
Kiara Artha Park
Instead of functioning as a moving billboard, each location became an immersive brand touchpoint.
Visitors were encouraged to step closer, explore the truck, take photographs, and participate in giant paddle games. Win IKEA shopping vouchers.
In Bandung, visitors could also receive exclusive IKEA bag charms by sharing their experience through Instagram Stories and following IKEA Indonesia.
On the surface, these activities looked simple. Strategically, however, each interaction served a different marketing objective. The branded truck generated awareness, interactive games increased dwell time, rewards encouraged participation, social sharing extended organic reach, user-generated content amplified the campaign beyond its physical footprint, each touchpoint reinforced another. Not through advertising but through experience.
Great Brand Activation Creates Multiple Layers of Value
The most successful activation campaigns rarely achieve just one objective. A single execution can simultaneously create:
Brand Visibility: Taking the brand into communities rather than waiting for audiences to discover it.
Consumer Engagement: Transforming passive audiences into active participants.
Social Amplification: Encouraging audiences to voluntarily become campaign advocates.
Brand Affinity: Creating positive emotional associations through memorable interactions.
Mental Availability: Increasing the likelihood that consumers recall the brand when making purchasing decisions.
This is why the best activations are never measured solely by foot traffic or event attendance. Their true value lies in the memories they leave behind.
Strategy Always Comes Before Format
One of the biggest mistakes brands make is choosing an activation format before defining the business challenge.
Should we create a booth?
Should we organize a roadshow?
Should we build an installation?
Should we launch a pop-up?
These questions come too early. A stronger question is: What experience do we want people to remember?
Because the same business objective can be solved through completely different activation formats. The best activation is never the biggest, it's the one that fits the audience, the context, and the story the brand wants to tell.
What Marketing Leaders Should Take Away
Today's consumers don't separate online and offline experiences. To them, every interaction contributes to one overall perception of a brand. That's why experiential marketing is no longer a supporting tactic.
It has become an essential part of modern brand building. The brands that win attention tomorrow won't necessarily be those spending the most on media.
They will be the brands creating experiences people choose to talk about. Experiences that travel beyond a campaign timeline. Beyond a venue, beyond a social post. Experiences that stay in memory because visibility can be purchased.
Memorability has to be earned.
Let's Build Experiences People Remember
Every brand faces a different challenge. Some need to launch a new product, some want to increase consideration, others need to reconnect with communities, strengthen customer loyalty, or transform awareness into meaningful engagement.
